William Walter Fabanish

February 14, 1925 – August 17, 2014

William “Bill” Walter Fabanish was born in McDonald, Ohio, and joined the United States Navy on June 10, 1943. He was a plank owner of USS Franklin (CV-13) and served aboard during the carrier’s World War II combat operations. During the attack of March 19, 1945, Bill escaped from deep inside the burning ship, was blown into the ocean by an explosion, and was rescued by USS Santa Fe.

Bill was honorably discharged as a Seaman First Class on March 2, 1946. His decorations included the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with three stars, Victory Medal, American Area Medal, and Philippine Liberation Medal with one star. After the war, he worked as an automobile technician and transmission specialist before retiring to Henderson, Nevada. He was survived by his sisters, two daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
